Many children, even adults are very self-conscious about the appearance of their ears. Ears that are bigger than they would like, or even ears that are a regular size but stand out more than usual from the contour of the head. This can cause the person many problems with their self-esteem, bulling at school and dissatisfaction with their appearance.
Otoplasty or pinning of the ears is a procedure performed to place the ears closer to the head. Most commonly performed in children, but can be performed in adults, too. It can be done under local or general anesthesia. Incisions are placed in back of the ears and disappear with time. The procedure can take about an hour. There will be some swelling and discomfort the first couple of days but this can be managed with pain medication, elevation of the head as well as cold compresses placed on the ears.
Contact sports or activities where the ear can be forced forward should be avoided for some time since the suture holding the ears in place can rupture and the ear can return to its previous position.
The procedure is performed as an outpatient, so there is no need to stay at the hospital overnight. This can also be combined with minimizing of the earlobe or other procedures in cases where it is needed.
